Eric Berger's Mock Draft Extravaganza

1999 Mock Draft

This is the five-round mock I did on April 10th. I got 27 of 31 first round picks correctly.

Mock Draft (April 10, 1999)

First Round Second RoundThird Round Fourth Round Fifth Round

1 Cleveland .............. Tim Couch . . . . . QB . . . . . Kentucky . . . . . 6'5 223 You could make arguments for several players being the top pick, but Couch seems lik the best fit for the Browns. He's the best of the QBs right now, & they should go QB because RBs take less time to develop. Plus he's made it no secret he wants to play there.

2 Philadelphia .............. Akili Smith . . . . . QB . . . . . Oregon . . . . . 6'3 215 They won't trade down lower than 7 or 8, so unless New Orleans or New England moves up, Philly will keep the pick & take a QB. Duce Staley is no Ricky Williams, but he is one of their few good players. Plus they aren't blind to Ricky Williams' hints that he does not want to play there.

3 Cincinnatti .............. Donovan McNabb . . . . . QB . . . . . Syracuse . . . . . 6'2 219 QB or CB? CB is a major need & Champ Bailey would fit in perfectly. Then again, how often do you have a shot at a franchise QB? I think they go QB. Like Philly, they probably won't tade out of the top 7 or 8, so they can still get one of the top 4 QBs & will likely keep the pick.

4 Indianapolis .............. Chris Claiborne . . . . LB . . . . USC . . . . 6'3 250 The most likely spot for a trade since their biggest needs -- anything on defense -- can still be met with a pick outside the top ten. If they stay here they get Claiborne or Kearse; if they dropped down to 12, they probably can get Katzenmoyer. Katzenmoyer has, I believe, been working out well, & closing the gap with Claiborne & Kearse. Considering they have so many needs, Katzenmoyer + a 1 next year from N.O. , two threes , etc, sound better than just Claiborne. Taking Williams & trading Faulk is also a possibility, but Faulk is worth a lot more to them than to anyone else & they'd be ignoring their needs. If they keep the pick, it'll be defense.

5 Washington (from Car.) .............. Ricky Williams . . . . . RB . . . . . Texas . . . . . 6'0 220 I sincerely doubt Washington gets this lucky. But if Williams fell, they'd take him. With Terry Allen & Skip Hicks, I think RB is far from their greatest need. However, Terry Allen can't have much left, & Skip Hicks does just have a few games under his belt. If Williams is gone, they'd probably love Champ Bailey. They'd also look at Claiborne , Kearse, McAlister & the WRs. Best bet: Indy trades & the Skins get Bailey.

6 St. Louis .............. Champ Bailey . . . . CB . . . . Georgia . . . . 6'1 186 Send your complaints to: eberger1306@hotmail.com. But hear me out. Edgerrin James is good, but I don't think he is nearly as good as Ricky Williams. Williams is an All-Pro. So is Bailey, but I'm not sure that James. CB is not as dire a need as RB, but Robert Holcombe deserves a second chance & they have two 2s. Taking Bailey would let them greatly upgrade the position over Lyght, or they could end their love-hate relationship with McNeil. Heck, if Bailey's still around, they should consider trading down.

7 Chicago .............. Daunte Culpepper . . . . . QB . . . . . Central Florida . . . . . 6'5 240 I hear the Bears are losing interest in Culpepper & would much rather have Smith or McNabb. This makes things interesting -- I said the only way someone can end up with Philly's or Cincy's pick is to trade up from 8 or higher, not 12 or 20. If the Bears drop down, then maybe the Saints or Pats get this pick & use it to move up further. I think they'll stay put & take Culpepper. He's to good to pass up. They are lucky to have shot at him. Or it is very possible that Bailey or Claiborne is still available, especially if the Colts trade.

8 Arizona (from SD) .............. John Tait . . . OT . . . . . BYU . . . 6'7 290 I'm still not convinced Tait is worth taking this high, but everyone else seems to think he's the man.

9 Detroit .............. Jevon Kearse . . . . OLB . . . . Florida . . . . 6'5 254 Probably Kearse or Tait -- whoever AZ doesn't take. I also keep hearing their name mentioned as a possibility to trade down.

10 Baltimore .............. Torry Holt . . . . . WR . . . . . NC St . . . . . 6'1 193 The Ravens recently signed Scott Mitchell, so I bet they think they've found their QB. Next on the list is WR. Holt recently ran a 4.38 in the 40, ending any concern about his knee & he regains his position as the #1 WR.

11 Minnesota (from Wash) .............. Chris McAlister . . . . CB . . . . Arizona . . . . 6'1 193 McAlister is a very good fit for them. If he's gone, they'll consider QB & DE. They'd probably love a shot at Culpepper.

12 New Orleans .............. Edgerrin James . . . . . RB . . . . . Miami . . . . . 6'1 220 The Saints would grab up James if he fell this far. Boston also makes a lot of sense. The Saints are trying like hell to trade up to get Ricky Williams, though. If RW falls to Indy's pick, expect the Saints to make a deal, giving up this year's 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, & next year's 1 & 3. Indy would be crazy to say no. (That is unless NE makes a better deal. Don't expect anything to happen until draft day.)

13 Pittsburgh .............. David Boston . . . . . WR . . . . . Ohio St . . . . . 6'3 205 Safety has become a major needs, but none are worth taking here & Boston wonderfully fills another big need.

14 Kansas City .............. L.J. Shelton . . . . OT . . . . Eastern Michigan . . . . 6'6 342 They really need a RB, but won't get one with this pick.

15 Tampa Bay .............. Cade McNown . . . . . QB . . . . . UCLA . . . . . 6'0 205

16 Tennessee .............. Andy Katzenmoyer . . . . ILB . . . . Ohio St . . . . 6'4 260

17 Seattle .............. Damien Woody . . . . . C . . . . . Boston College . . . . . 6'4 311

18 Oakland .............. Aaron Gibson . . . . . OT . . . . . Wisconsin . . . . . 6'7 371

19 NY Giants .............. Ebenezer Ekuban . . . . DE . . . . North Carolina . . . . 6'4 265

22 Dallas .............. Kevin Johnson . . . . . WR . . . . Syracuse . . . . . 5'10 187

23 Buffalo .............. Antoine Winfield . . . . CB . . . . Ohio St . . . . 5'9 180

26 Jacksonville .............. Patrick Kerney . . . . . DE . . . . Virginia . . . . . 6'6 265

27 San Francisco .............. Lamar King . . . . DE . . . . Saginaw Valley St . . . . 6'3 275 4.9

28 New England (from NY Jets) .............. James Johnson . . . . . RB . . . . . Mississippi St . . . . . 6'2 233

29 Minnesota .............. Reggie McGrew . . . . DT . . . . Florida . . . . 6'2 302

30 Atlanta .............. Antwan Edwards . . . . S . . . . Clemson . . . . 6'1 211
